Unique Personalities of European Cities Seen Through Their Windows

Windows of Évora, Portugal

Traveling is the souls’ only true way to wisdom and flourishing knowledge. It is what brings us together on Placeaholic.

But, as a manifestation, it can take many forms and aspects, with similarities and oppositions alike. So there is no perfect traveling, not a single guide to tell you what your soul should search next. Every place you visit has something special attached to it, a sight, a landscape, the colors or the atmosphere. European cities have their identity too, and quite a strong one. What I love most about Europe is the way that, in such a small continent, you can admire so many differences. Every city is special in its own kind, we have the Germanic rigorous architecture in the Central Europe, the ravishing freedom in the South, the luxurious romance of the West and many other adjectives flow through my mind in order to characterize, classify or simply distinguish the great pan-European family.

But I know for sure there is one way of revealing their personality of which you have never thought before to be possible. Through their windows. That’s right, each town, each big city, each place representative for a culture, has its very own ways of dealing with windows. This is what Portuguese photographer André Vincente Gonçalves proved exactly and opened my eyes to. He realized a series of pictures while visiting Venice, Trento, London, Bucharest, Barcelona, The Alps, Porto, Lisbon or other smaller cities in Portugal, like Sesimbra or Evora.

This work is entitled Windows of the Worldby Andre Goncalves

If you look closely, they will not only look very cute, but they will all actually make sense. It is one of the brightest ideas I have seen in the last period. They represent a maze, a symmetrical-shaped scenario, with each and every one bearing uniqueness and vivid fantasy. Next time when you find yourself in Europe, make sure you check on the windows of the cities you visit, they might tell you stories of the past and give you insights about the place you’re in.
